Russian Hats - Ushankas

The ushanka is a derivative of the types of hats that have been used for centuries by people living in the colder regions of Russia, Germany and Scandinavia. The painting herein shows a German hunter wearing what appears to be a ushanka-type hat in 1643.

The modern ushanka was developed in response to the significant loss of Soviet army soldiers during the winter months of the beginning of World War II.   Interestingly, copies of this form were then adapted by the Germans and, later, by China’s People’s Liberation Army.
